Māori Businesses in 2020

Statistics New Zealand branch of the New Zealand Government just released it's statistics on Māori businesses and Māori authorities. Check out the definition of each and the charts.

Definitions:

  • Māori authorities are businesses involved in the collective management of assets held by Māori.
  • SMEs are Māori businesses with fewer than 100 employees, and are not Māori authorities.

Key facts for 2020:

  • there were 1,230 Māori authorities
  • three-fifths of Māori authorities were classified as essential during COVID-19 alert level 4 lockdown
  • almost one-fifth of Māori SMEs reduced the range of goods and services they offered during the lockdown periods of COVID-19
  • one-half of Māori tourism businesses adapted their business for new markets in response to COVID-19
  • Māori authorities exported around $755 million worth of goods, almost half of which was to China
  • the average Māori farm was five times the size of the average New Zealand farm
  • total assets for Māori authorities reached $24.3 billion.
